Our vision is to empower school aged youth through an alternative educational setting to developing fundamental writing skills through creativity.

The Film Writes Program provides a unique and innovative opportunity for elementary, middle, & high school level students to learn critical writing skills through the use of creative storytelling. This allows the youth to be expressive while developing appropriate age level writing techniques.

sTructure | Week 1-4
In the beginning weeks, students will learn about creative writing, what it is and how to creatively express themselves. Each week is custom tailored to the student’s needs. The experience will be both hands-on and self paced.
Self-expression | Week 5-7
During these weeks, students will learn about different types of genres and write a short or script for two of the genres of their choosing. This will allow them to put into practice what they’ve learned about story structure and pacing in the beginning weeks.
Collaboration | week 8-10
Week 1: Students will team up with another student in the same peer group as them. They will choose a prompt and write a story together.
Week 2: Students will mix it up. Younger students will be paired with older students, a prompt will be chosen and write a story together.

Critical thinking | week 11
In the beginning weeks, students will learn about creative writing, what it is and how to creatively express themselves. Each week is custom tailored to the student’s needs. The experience will be both hands-on and self paced.
intro to film production | week 12-14
We’ve made it to the end! During these students will learn about film production and have the opportunity to choose a story they have written over the past couple of weeks and produce a short film for their final presentation during the graduation of the program.
**The curriculum is tailored to meet the recommended English standards for each grade level from elementary to high school.

Founder

Mella has worked in the creative industry for 10+ years, gaining experience in film production and creative writing. She has received her Bachelors of Arts in Film and Video from Georgia State University and her Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Full Sail University.
As a seasoned Creative Director, she is passionate about helping youth advancing in their educational, social, emotional and creative skills. She founded Film Writes to provide an enrichment program for youth in the English subject. This program is a supplement for English teachers as well as a stand alone summer program for parents looking to keep their children academically engaged between school breaks.
